A series of high-profile trials against Capitol riot leaders culminated last week in the sentencing of former Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio to 22 years in prison. More than 1,100 people have already been charged, but the investigation into the riots is far from over, writes the BBC’s Mike Wendling. On January 6, 2021, Evan Newman was near the front of the crowd that stormed the U.S. Capitol. Wearing a red MAGA hat and gas mask, he assaulted at least four police officers, punching them and hitting parts of a metal barrier. According to a criminal complaint, he insulted the officers, called them “killers” and shouted, “I’m ready to die, aren’t I?” Newman, 51, was eventually charged with 14 counts related to the riot, but before he could stand trial. He could have been arrested, because he fled the United States.
Why is the FBI still searching for hundreds of Capitol rioters?
