Greece floods: Mayor of Volos warns to "stay home!"

At least one person has died in Greece, after heavy rains caused flash floods in parts of the country.

The port city of Volos, north of Athens, saw the same amount of water falling in 24 hours as it normally does throughout the fall, according to local experts.

The Mayor of Volos, Achilleas Pius, visited some of the flooded areas and said, “There is no reason to move. Stay at home until we can operate our equipment.”

Greek police banned travel to Volos, some parts of nearby Pelion and the famous island of Skiathos.

A spokesman for the company that operates regional airports in Greece told AFP that planes are currently unable to approach Skiathos airport.
